River Oak Outreach Team for Schools Mission:
Here at River Oak Church our ROOTS ministry exists to serve and support our local schools—especially those in lower-income areas—by caring for students, teachers, administrators, and staff. Through practical help like providing school supplies and consistent encouragement, we aim to bridge the gap in resources and reflect the love and provision of Christ in tangible ways.

Annual ROOTS Ministry Support: 

  1. Back-to-School Support
    • Timing: July–August
    • Focus: Equip Oscar Smith High School students with essential school supplies & welcome back events for teachers & staff at partner schools 
    • Activities:
      • Backpack and school supply drive for Oscar Smith High School
      • Welcome back breakfasts, treats, or supplies for partner schools
  2. Thanksgiving Meals
    • Timing: November
    • Focus: Provide Thanksgiving meals to families in need
    • Activities:
      • Food bag collection and packing
      • Meal delivery for partner schools
  3. Angel Tree Christmas Gifts
    • Timing: December
    • Focus: Bless students from low-income schools with Christmas gifts
    • Activities:
      • Congregation sign-ups to purchase gifts
      • Organize gifts and deliveries to schools
  4. Teacher Appreciation Week
    • Timing: May (National Teacher Appreciation Week)
    • Focus: Encourage and honor school faculty and staff
    • Activities:
      • Treats, meals, or gift bags for teachers
      • Thank-you cards and prayer support

Ongoing ROOTS Support & Engagement: 

  • Prayer and encouragement for students, teachers, and staff
  • Volunteer opportunities throughout the year, specifically mentoring & tutoring opportunities at Oscar Smith High School
  • Partnerships with school counselors and administrators to identify needs

You don’t need special skills, just a willing heart.  Together, we can be a powerful presence of Christ’s love in our schools.
